Finally a Decent iTunes Alternative
It’s called Cog and it has replaced iTunes as my dominant Mac music player. Here are the three main reasons I now use Cog instead of iTunes:
- Fast and simple interface
- Supports a variety of formats
- Doesn’t “control” your music
Load times and the application itself are lightning fast and responsive. The interface is simple and well designed, yet yields powerful features.
Cog supports an incredibly large amount of formats: Ogg Vorbis, Mp3, Flac, Musepack, Monkeys Audio, Shorten, Wavpack, AAC, Apple Lossless, Wave/AIFF, Video Game (nsf, gbs, gym, spc, vgm, hes, and more!), Tracker (it, s3m, xm, mod), m3u and pls playlists, Cue sheets.
And it doesn’t control your music! iTunes (by default) likes to grab your music and make copies of it to store in dark mysterious places deep inside your computer. Cog works more like Winamp: You have your music organized in folders. Just point to that folder in Cog and you’re able to open up a nice “drawer” to view and play your tunes.
Don’t let the software distract you from your music! Try Cog.
